How Much Does It Cost to Paint a House in Massachusetts?
Most painting projects in Greater Boston run between $2,500 and $8,000. A single room sits well below that; a full exterior or a whole-home repaint sits at the top of it or above. The number is driven by preparation, not by paint.
Most painting projects in Greater Boston run between $2,500 and $8,000. A single room sits well below that. A full exterior or a whole-home repaint sits at the top of that range or above it.
That is a wide band, and the width is the useful part of the answer: the cost of a paint job is driven by preparation, not by square footage.
What actually moves the number
| Driver | Effect on price | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Condition of the surfaces | Largest single factor | Cracked plaster, flaking paint and bare wood are hours of labor before any color goes on |
| Amount of trim | Large | Trim is brush work; a room with deep baseboards, paneled doors and crown molding costs far more than its wall area suggests |
| Ceiling height | Moderate to large | Twelve-foot ceilings mean staging and slower cutting in |
| Color change | Moderate | Dark to light, or bare to finished, can mean an extra coat |
| Number of colors | Small to moderate | Every additional color is another cut-in line and another set-up |
| Access | Varies | Three stories, tenanted stairwells and difficult parking all cost time |
| Paint quality | Small | The paint is a modest share of the total. Cheaping out here saves little and costs years |
The last row surprises people. On a typical interior job the materials are a fraction of the cost and the labor is nearly all of it — which is why using a better paint barely moves the total, and why a quote that is dramatically cheaper is almost never cheaper because of the paint.
How to compare quotes that look different
If two estimates for the same house differ by thousands, the answer is in the scope, not the arithmetic. Ask each of them:
- What preparation is included? Filling, sanding, caulking, priming — named individually, not summarized as “prep”.
- How many coats, and of what? Two coats of a named product is a specification. “Repaint” is not.
- Is the trim included? And are doors being done on their edges and tops, or only the faces?
- Is hardware removed or taped around? It is a small question that tells you a great deal about the rest.
- What happens to repairs found mid-job? A quote with no answer to this is a quote that will change.
A cheaper number for less work can be the right choice. A cheaper number for what you assumed was the same work is the one that costs money later.
What we charge, and why we publish it
Our projects run in the $2,500–$8,000 band described above, and estimates are free, with no obligation. Cayo will also tell you which paint he recommends, and why.
We publish the range because almost nobody in this trade does, and the absence is not in the customer’s interest. You should be able to tell before you pick up the phone whether a painter is in your budget.
Three of our Google reviews mention pricing independently. One customer had three quotes and took ours as the most reasonable. Another notes the project was completed at the price agreed. A third was steered towards a higher-quality, cheaper paint than the brand they had picked out.
Questions
How much does it cost to paint a house in Massachusetts?
Most projects run between $2,500 and $8,000 in Greater Boston. A single room is well below that range, and a full exterior or whole-home repaint sits at the top of it or above. The biggest variable is how much preparation the surfaces need, not the size of the house.
Why are painting quotes so different from each other?
Almost always because they include different amounts of preparation. One quote assumes filling, sanding, caulking and priming; another assumes two coats straight over what is already there. They are not the same job, and comparing the totals without comparing the scope tells you nothing useful.
Is it cheaper to paint in winter?
For interiors, sometimes — demand drops once exterior season ends, so scheduling is easier. Exteriors are not a winter job in New England at any price, because most exterior paints will not cure properly below about 50°F.
