How far: Directly north of Somerville, usually under fifteen minutes.

Three different Medfords
Medford varies more by neighborhood than its neighbors do, and the painting work varies with it.
West Medford has the largest houses on the biggest lots — Colonials and Victorians with proper exteriors, deep porches and a lot of trim. These are full exterior jobs when they come up, with real staging and a real season to hit.
South Medford, closer to the Somerville line, looks much more like Somerville: denser two-families and triple-deckers, often tenanted, often painted a unit at a time.
In between, around Medford Square, Haines Square and Glenwood, sits a large stock of single-family houses from roughly the 1920s through the 1950s — the most straightforward painting in the city.
Exteriors are a bigger part of the job here
Because Medford has more free-standing houses than Somerville or Cambridge, full exterior repaints make up a larger share of what we do.
That makes the calendar matter. Most exterior paints need surface and air temperatures above roughly 50°F to cure, which in practice means late April to mid-October around here, with May, June, September and early October the most dependable months. Those slots fill from the spring onwards.
It also makes preparation the dominant cost. On an exterior, the wash, the scrape, the spot-priming of bare wood and the renewed caulk are not preliminaries — they are the job, and they are the difference between a finish that lasts a decade and one that lasts four years.
Attics, dormers and sloped ceilings
Medford’s older houses very often have a finished or half-finished top floor, and these rooms are a distinct kind of work.
Sloped ceilings, knee walls, dormer cheeks and skylight reveals mean far more cutting in than rolling, and the low headroom slows down everything else. An attic room takes noticeably longer than a square bedroom of the same floor area, so we quote it separately.
They are also worth doing well. A finished attic is usually the brightest room in the house once it is painted, and the difference between a competent job and a rushed one is very visible when daylight comes in from above.

Questions
Painting in Medford — common questions
Do you paint the whole exterior of a house in Medford?
Yes — clapboard, shingle, trim, porches, steps and railings. Medford has more free-standing single-family houses than Somerville does, so full exteriors are a bigger share of the work here. The season runs roughly late April to mid-October.
Can you finish an attic conversion?
Yes, and it comes up often in Medford's older stock. Sloped ceilings, knee walls and dormers are more cutting-in than rolling, and the low headroom slows everything down, so attic rooms are quoted on their own rather than counted as ordinary bedrooms.
Do you work near Tufts with student rentals?
Yes. Turnaround jobs between tenants are a normal part of the work, and if you are painting to a move-in date, say so up front so the estimate is priced to that date.
My ceilings are stained from an old leak. Can you fix them?
The stains can be sealed and painted so they do not come back, using a stain-blocking primer — ordinary paint will let them bleed through again, sometimes weeks later. But the leak itself has to be fixed first, or the stain simply returns.
How far is Medford from you?
Medford is directly north of Somerville, so it is a short trip with no meaningful travel premium on the estimate.
