Work we have finished in Newton
The photographs on this page are Cayo’s own, from bedrooms we have finished in Newton: one in a soft dusty rose with white window trim, one in a deep teal under a white ceiling, and one in a warm cream with white trim and a paneled door.
Three bedrooms, three very different colors — and three different kinds of difficulty.
Why a bedroom is not just a small room
Bedrooms look like the easy part of a house. In practice they come with their own problems.
They are lived in. Beds, dressers and wardrobes rarely leave the room, so the job starts with moving everything to the middle and covering it properly. Then it has to go back where it was, and the room has to be usable again by night.
The color is personal. A bedroom is where people take the biggest color risks — deep teals, navies, dusty pinks. Those colors are beautiful when they are even, and unforgiving when they are not.
The trim is close to the eye. Window casings, door frames and baseboards are seen up close every day. A sloppy cut line along white trim against a strong wall color is the first thing anyone notices.
Dark and strong colors
The teal bedroom on this page shows why deep colors take longer. They show every roller mark and every patch of uneven coverage, and they usually need more coats to reach a solid, even finish. The line where a dark wall meets a white ceiling has to be cut by hand, and there is nowhere for a wobble to hide.
Pale colors forgive more. The cream bedroom is a quieter job — but the paneled door and white trim still need brush work done properly, because that is where the eye goes in a pale room.
Thirteen villages, older houses
Newton is called the Garden City, and it is really thirteen villages — from Newton Corner and Nonantum near the Charles to Waban, Chestnut Hill and Oak Hill to the south. Much of the city’s housing is older family homes: Victorians, Colonial Revivals and early-1900s houses, with mid-century homes filling in further out.
For painting, older Newton houses mean plaster walls that crack along the same lines every winter, original woodwork carrying many layers of paint, and — in any house built before 1978 — the possibility of lead in the old paint. The guide to lead paint in pre-1978 homes explains what the federal rules say.

Neighborhoods
Newton is not one place
Each part of Newton has its own housing mix, and the painting changes with it. Here is how the work differs across Newton.
- On the Green Line
Newton Centre & Newton Highlands
Villages built around the D branch stations. Large older houses — Victorians, Colonial Revivals, early 1900s family homes — with generous trim, plaster walls and a century of paint on the woodwork.
- Along the Pike and the rail line
Newtonville, West Newton & Auburndale
The villages strung along the Mass Pike and the commuter rail. A wide mix of house ages, from Victorian to mid-century, which is why every estimate starts by looking at the actual walls.
- "The Lake"
Nonantum
Newton's tight-knit village by the Charles, known locally as the Lake. Closer-set houses than much of the city, with more two-family homes — where units, stairwells and shared hallways come into the job.
- Larger houses, more rooms
Waban & Chestnut Hill
Some of Newton's biggest houses, many with original detail worth keeping crisp. More rooms means scheduling matters: a house this size is usually painted in stages so the family can keep living in it.
- The old mill villages
Upper & Lower Falls
Villages that grew around mills on the Charles River, near Echo Bridge. Some of the oldest housing in the city, with woodwork that has been painted many times over.
Landlords & multi-family
Painting Newton rental property
Newton is mostly single-family, but villages like Nonantum have more two-family houses. If you are turning over a unit or painting a shared hallway, say so when you ask for the estimate and tell us the move-in date — it is priced to hit it.

Questions
Painting in Newton — common questions
Do you work in Newton?
Yes. The photographs on this page are from bedrooms we have finished in Newton — one in dusty rose, one in deep teal and one in warm cream. They are Cayo's own pictures, taken on site, not stock.
Can you paint a bedroom in a dark color like teal or navy?
Yes. Dark colors need more care than light ones — they show every roller mark and every uneven cut line, and they usually need more coats to reach a solid, even finish. The teal bedroom on this page is an example.
Can we keep sleeping in the house while you paint the bedrooms?
Usually, yes. Bedrooms are often done one or two at a time so there is always somewhere to sleep, with furniture moved to the middle and covered rather than moved out. Talk it through when you ask for the estimate and the schedule is built around it.
Our Newton house was built before 1978. Does that matter?
It can. Most of Newton's housing is older than that, and paint applied before 1978 may contain lead. Federal rules set how painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes must be handled when they are disturbed. Our guide to lead paint in pre-1978 homes explains what the rules say.
Which Newton villages do you cover?
All thirteen — Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Centre, Newton Corner, Newton Highlands, Newton Lower Falls, Newton Upper Falls, Newtonville, Nonantum, Oak Hill, Thompsonville, Waban and West Newton.
