Basement Painting
Basement Painters in Somerville & Greater Boston
Newly finished basements and lower-level rooms, painted from primer — with the damp question asked before any paint goes on.

Painting comes after the water question
The first thing to settle in any basement is whether it is dry. Paint over a damp wall blisters, peels and grows mildew, and all it does is hide a water problem until it gets worse.
If there are signs of damp — a tide line on the wall, a musty smell, efflorescence on the concrete — the source has to be dealt with first. That can be as simple as a gutter or a downspout, or it can be a job for a waterproofing contractor. Painting is the last step, not the fix.
New basements start from primer
Most basement painting is in newly finished space: fresh drywall, fresh joint compound, and new trim. That is a different job from repainting an existing wall.
Fresh drywall and joint compound absorb paint unevenly. Skip or rush the primer and the joints and patches show through the finish as dull stripes — a problem known as flashing. The photograph on this page is from a basement in Leominster, painted from primer with the framing still exposed in part.
Low light and low ceilings
Basements are hard on color. With little natural light, colors read darker on the wall than they do on a paint chip, so it pays to test a sample on the actual wall under the lights you will use.
Low ceilings, ductwork, pipes and beams also mean a lot of cutting in, and good ventilation matters while the paint dries in a space with few windows.

Questions
Basement Painting — common questions
Can you paint a newly finished basement?
Yes. A newly finished basement starts from primer on fresh drywall, which is a different job from repainting an old wall. The priming stage is what decides how even the final color looks. The Leominster basement on this page shows that stage.
Our basement walls are damp. Will paint fix it?
No. Paint over a damp wall will blister and peel, and it hides the problem rather than solving it. The source of the water has to be dealt with first — grading, gutters, a leak, or a waterproofing contractor. Painting comes after.
What color works in a basement?
Basements have little natural light, so colors read darker on the wall than on the chip. Test a sample on the actual wall, under the actual lights, before committing. Warmer whites and lighter tones usually help a low room feel bigger.
Do you paint unfinished concrete basement walls?
Ask when you request the estimate. Bare masonry needs a different product and different preparation from drywall, and whether it makes sense depends on the wall and whether it stays dry.
